Chapter sixteen

Ben and I scrambled off each other, and I grabbed my pants and jeans, yanking them back on. Ben rolled across the floor and snatched up his t-shirt, jamming it over his head. I was about to tell him it was on the wrong way round, but before I could, Allison and Kira appeared in the alcove’s opening.

“What happened?” Allison asked, hands to her chest. “We heard you shout!”

I ran a hand through my hair as I scrambled for a response. But then Kira adopted a shit-eating grin.

“Oh, she’s fine,” she said and then jutted her chin in Ben’s direction. “Hi Ben.”

“Uh... hi.” Ben raised his hand and waved awkwardly.

Allison’s mouth fell open, and her eyes stretched even wider. “Maeve! In the library?”

“He seduced me,” I said, pointing at Ben.

Ben put on a face of mock shock and placed a hand on his chest, where his fingers found the tag on his shirt. “Ah, crap. I mean... would I? Would I?”

“Oh, this is gold.” Kira clapped her hands together and threw back her head, cackling. “I will never let you forget this. If you two are quite finished-.” Kira craned her head forward and looked from one of us to the other. “You did both finish, right?”

Allison squeaked so loud it sounded more like a shriek, and in a burst of green leaves, she transformed into her tree form. Her eyes glowed emerald, and she reached toward Kira, thick branches sprouting from her hands.

“Hey!” Kira beat her wings, but the branches wrapped around her torso and dragged her back down to the ground.

In seconds, Allison had wrapped Kira in a cocoon of branches, and my mouth fell open as she picked Kira up and lifted her over her head.

“If you’re longer than five minutes, I’m going to come and get you,” Allison said, piercing me with her glowing eyes.

“That’s what Ben said!” Kira cried, before the branches covered her mouth and Allison marched toward the stairs with a wriggling Kira above her head.

My cheeks flushed, and I covered them with my hands as I turned to Ben. Gods, they were so embarrassing.

“I’m sorry about them,” I said.

But Ben’s grin couldn’t have gotten wider. “They’re great,” he said. “They’re good for you.”

“That’s up for debate.” I met him halfway as he shuffled on his knees across the floor to me, and I fell into his arms. “But I love them.”

Ben kissed my forehead. “I’m glad you’ve got some backup with all this going on.”

“Well.” I ran a hand up his neck to his cheek. “Hopefully after this weekend, we won’t need backup anymore.”

“Let’s hope not.” Ben smiled weakly. “I’ll get my family there, and I’ll... see you there?”

“I’ll be the one with the cattle prod.”

With Allison’s promise niggling at the back of my mind, I got to my feet and pulled Ben up with me. I held his hand as I walked away, waiting until the last minute to let go. As his face disappeared behind the bookcases, I cradled a little hope deep in my core.
